Nathan Sykes’ song about Ariana Grande has got a “really nice message”.
The 21-year-old singer, formerly of boyband The Wanted, penned the track about his ex following their split in 2013 after a four-month romance.
But Nathan insists the pair ended things on good terms and he has reflected this in the as-yet unnamed tune.
“I’m one of those really annoying people for exes, like, I don’t hold grudges whatsoever,” Nathan told MTV News. “And I am one of the people who only takes really positive experiences from relationships and moves forward with it. So it’s a really nice song even though it is quite heartbreaking. It’s got a really nice message with it. It’s just the song that [says] you can’t be angry at any situation because sometimes things just don’t work out and you’ve just got to roll with it and move on.”
Nathan also revealed Ariana isn’t only the inspiration he used for the record.
And he is hoping the album, the first single from which will be released later this year, will prove a hit among his fans.
“There’s a few different people that I write about. There’s a couple of breakups that I write about and a few almost romances and what-not,” Nathan said. “And there are a couple songs that talk about being in relationships as well, so it’s going to be quite funny when people start to listen to the lyrics.”
The Wanted’s fans were left stunned when the group announced back in January 2014 that they would be going on a hiatus.
And Nathan said while it has taken some time to get used to recording as a solo artist, he is hoping to prove he is more than just “the young one from The Wanted”.
“I’m far too young to put on hold my music career,” Nathan said. “I feel like I have a lot to give and I feel like I have a lot of music to write and a lot to prove as well.”
