Beck may have ruined Sam Smith's night.

The artist's Morning Phase came out the surprise winner for Album of the Year stopping Smith from becoming only the second artist to sweep the top four awards (Christopher Cross remains the only artist to do it) and beating out Beyonce who was the favorite.

Beck, himself, looked a bit surprised at the win, especially when Kanye West ran up on stage and looked like he was going to repeat his Taylor Swift take down from a few years ago (it turned out to be a joke). Beck also won Best Rock Album.

Smith had to settle for Record of the Year, Song of the Year (both for Stay With Me), Pop Vocal Album (In the Lonely Hour) and Best New Artist.

Of course, the real strength of the 3 hour and 35 minute show were the performances which often paired new with veteran artists such as Jessie J and Tom Jones' take on You Lost That Lovin' Feeling in salute to Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and Ed Sheeran being joined first by Herbie Hancock and Questlove from the Roots and later joining Jeff Lynne and ELO on Mr. Blue Sky.

The biggest highlight of the night was Hozier being joined by Annie Lennox on his hit Take Me to Church followed by Lennox singing a blistering I Put a Spell on You.

The final group of winners:
