Jessie J “was gutted” not to receive a Brit Awards nomination this year.

The Domino singer is up for a Grammy next month but didn’t receive the same acknowledgement in her own country. The fact that the 26-year-old is a Brit School alum and won a Critics Choice Award at the event makes it an even harder pill to swallow for the singer.

“I was gutted. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t,” she told British newspaper The Mirror’s 3am column. “It would be nice if they celebrated people who come out of the Brit School and become British pop stars. It is a matter of opinion and choice. I always say, ‘You can’t always be on top.’ It’s not my choice, I can’t make people nominate me.”

The star has had a hectic year, working with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj on their hit Bang Bang as well as duetting with Mary J. Blige on her Christmas album. Thankfully Jessie has been in the industry long enough to know how to handle situations like this and it won’t stop her being proud to be British.

“I’d always love to be nominated for Best Female,” she added. “Even though I am not here all the time, I am always flying the flag. But this is not my time to shine.”

The star received support from her peers after the surprise snub. Last week fellow Brit Ellie Goulding said she was “shocked” by Jessie’s omission from the ceremony.

Jessie is thankful for the support and ever the professional, she was more than happy to share with the outlet her thoughts on the ladies who had made the cut.

“I am excited for people who have been nominated,” she confessed. “FKA Twigs is incredible. Ella Henderson, I’m a huge fan of. There are some amazing nominees in there.”
