Pete Wentz went through “a lot of highs and lows” during his 20s.

The Fall Out Boy bassist has been taking medication for Bi-polar Disorder since he was 18. But he admits that he still struggled with the condition during the height of the bands fame.

“I think I went through when I was in my 20s… I went through a lot of highs and lows,” he said during a chat with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show. “For me… you’re travelling on the road. Everything is available to you and you can get what you need to get, or not… People just want to keep the machine going. They don’t so much care how healthy you are… It wasn’t really until having kids, that’s the ultimate happy pill.”

The 35-year-old has two children, six-year-old son Bronx from his first marriage to fellow musician Ashlee Simpson, and son Saint Laszlo who was born in August last year with girlfriend Meagan Camper. During the hour long chat, Pete opened up about what went wrong between him and Ashlee.

“Being too young… I think there’s an important thing where you know how to fight,” he revealed. “You can fight with somebody but it’s not the end of everything. But if you don’t know how to have those arguments then they become nuclear. And we were doing this all in the public eye, which you know doesn’t help.”

Now he is older and wiser, Pete has found ways to deal with his mental illness, which he shared with the radio host.

“My highs, my happiness are really high and my lows are very low and I’m not able to regulate between the two,” he said.

“Through actual therapy and having kids it’s way more under control and something I can see when I’m on the roller coaster and control it more.”
