A Facebook campaign is underway to direct people to buy the song. So far over 19,000 fans have ‘liked’ the ‘Iron Maiden For Christmas No 1’ page.

The slogan for the page is “Up the Irons! Up the charts! Up yer arse Cowell!”.

The page creator’s messages states, “For those involved in the various Xmas #1 campaigns of the past (in particular the RATM one) you’ll appreciate how much of a laugh it is. Well we’re big Maiden fans and seeing them snatch the Christmas #1 would be brilliant”.

“From 14th December 2014 we will ALL be buying a digital download of the track Number of the Beast to hopefully make it the NUMBER ONE of the Beast!”.

Number of the Beast was written by Iron Maiden’s co-founder Steve Harris after seeing the movie Damien: Omen II. The voice at the start of the song is British actor Barry Clayton who was second choice for the part. Iron Maiden originally contacted Vincent Price but negations fell over because Price’s price was too pricey. He wanted £25,000 for what was effectively a voice-over piece.

The song created controversy for Iron Maiden in America’s bible-belt with the band accused of being Satanic. As a result, the video for the song, featuring Iron Maiden mascot Eddie, had Eddie edited out for MTV viewing.
