Jennifer Lopez’s first serious heartbreak was Ben Affleck.

The 45-year-old singer has been married and divorced three times now and has two children with former husband Marc Anthony. But she still reflects on the Batman v Superman actor as the first time she was truly hit hard by the end of a relationship.

"It was probably my first big heartbreak,” J-Lo told Maria Shriver in an interview for the Today show in the US.

She began dating Ben, who is now married to Jennifer Garner, following her divorce from dancer Cris Judd in 2002. The couple became engaged and even earned the joint nickname “Bennifer”, but they broke up in January 2004. Just months later in June, Jennifer married Marc, with whom she had previously been close friends.

“To have one of my best friends who I'd known for years, who I actually love and did have chemistry with, come into my life and say, 'I'm here,'” she mused, referring to her swift transition from Ben to Marc.

But in hindsight, Jen thinks she should have spent more time alone rather than lean on someone else to help her get over Ben. She has now learned the benefit of relying on oneself.

“What you need to know is, nobody can save you or heal you," she told Maria. "Only you can do that for you."

Jennifer later went on to have twins Max and Emme with Marc in 2008, but the couple separated in 2012 and their divorce was finalized this year. She then had a relationship with her now 27-year-old back-up dancer Casper Smart, from 2011 until June of this year. But now the I Luh Ya Papi hitmaker is ready for some time alone.

"I'm open to love," Jennifer revealed. "But right now, I think it's better to just be on my own for a minute and learn more about myself."
