Angela Bassett was “mesmerised” by Whitney Houston on the set of Waiting to Exhale.

The 56-year-old actress starred in the 1995 drama based on Terry McMillan’s novel alongside the late singer, who passed away at the age of 48 in February 2012.

Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker directed the film, which centres on four women who grow tight bonds as they deal with challenges in their personal lives, and Angela has fond memories of working with Whitney.

“I was just mesmerised by her talent. It was a delightful time. It was amazing to be around her because she had done Bodyguard and had broke through this glass ceiling of what a Sister was paid, what a woman was paid for starring in a movie,” she recalled to HuffPost Live. “We just had a mutual admiration for each other and what we’re both working on or doing or creating and we were just there for each other, the four of us, in the Sisterhood having a great time with a great director who just adored everything the four of us did.”

Loretta Divine and Lela Rochon round out the four-member Sisterhood Angela speaks of.

And the Akeelah and the Bee star is sad they weren’t able to complete a follow-up feature.

“Us four ladies, [there] was hope we’d be able to do the sequel, then unfortunately her untimely passing made it really, really difficult to try to figure out how to tell the story,” Angela said.

Television network Lifetime is creating a movie on Whitney’s life with ex-husband Bobby Brown and Angela will be directing the picture, which airs in 2015.
