Pharrell Williams thinks Robin Thicke “is gonna be fine”.
The Happy singer was asked about Robin’s revelations that he was “high on Vicodin and alcohol” when he, Robin and rapper T.I. collaborated on hit track Blurred Lines.
Questioned as to whether he felt offended that Robin claimed credit for a track that he had very little to do with, Pharrell replied: “No. Because he inspired me. What am I without the inspiration that he gave me from just being who he was?”
“My reaction to that whole entire situation is that, here’s a guy who is incredibly talented, with a masterful voice,” he added in the interview with The Independent newspaper. “And… the success hit him very fast. But I think he’s gonna be fine.”
Pharrell also revealed he thinks Robin has learnt a lot about himself since the time they wrote Blurred Lines. Since the track, Robin’s life has changed drastically as he has split from wife Paula Patton.
“The beautiful part about this is that I feel like Robin learnt so much about himself in this scenario – and not many people see the kind of fame that he’s seen, and could continue to see if he wants it,” Pharrell said. “His voice is that good. His piano playing is that good. His writing is that good. What he’s realised out of all this is, he has the ability to do and be whatever it is he wants to be. And we’ll see what he decides.”
In a deposition given in April obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Robin insisted his previous statements about his contribution were embellished because he “had a drug and alcohol problem for the year" and "didn't do a sober interview”.
“To be honest, that's the only part where — I was high on Vicodin and alcohol when I showed up at the studio,” he said.
“So my recollection is when we made the song, I thought I wanted — I — I wanted to be more involved than I actually was by the time, nine months later, it became a huge hit and I wanted credit. So I started kind of convincing myself that I was a little more part of it than I was and I — because I didn't want him — I wanted some credit for this big hit. But the reality is, is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song."
