LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian say their reality new show is meant to be a comedy.

The couple, who began seeing each other while they were still married to their former spouses, attempt to clear the air about their relationship on VH1’s upcoming series LeAnn & Eddie.

But the actor insists the show isn’t meant as an attempt to “fire back” at his outspoken ex, Real Housewives star Brandi Glanville. He’s simply looking forward to working alongside his wife and hopes viewers will see the couple’s funnier sides.

"Ultimately, we wanted to do a show and I think that this format and this genre, unscripted, gave us an opportunity to do something fun and work together," he told E! News at a press event on Friday, adding, “This is a comedy and that's how we go about our life as well, is we laugh and it really helps."

"I think people think we take ourselves super seriously and we don't at all,” added LeAnn, who said she hopes the show will help her and Eddie “take our life back and have fun with our story and where we are now”.

The couple aren’t looking at other reality TV couples for guidance, however.

Asked about any potential similarities between their own show and True Tori, which featured Tori Spelling airing out her issues with cheating husband Dean McDermott, Eddie said: “That's obviously not what we're doing at all.”

Joking about what drove them to work on their own project despite so many couples breaking up after venturing into reality, LeAnn mused: "We wanted to ruin our marriage so that's why we went into this!"

The eight-episode series is scheduled to premiere July 17.
