Pharrell Williams admits it took him a while to value the people around him.

The 41-year-old Happy singer has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning over two decades and he has earned seven Grammy Awards.

But Pharrell says in his early years as a musician he wasn’t quite as grateful as he is now.

“I wasn’t always that way. I took a lot of years to understand the value of things and the value of the people you work with,” he explained to the British edition of Elle magazine in a cover interview for the July issue.

"The value of your fans who ultimately hold you high and lift you up. We’re just hang gliders, dude, and they are carrying us around.”

Pharrell married model-and-fashion designer Helen Lasichanh in October 2013 and the couple welcomed their son Rocket in 2008.

He is grateful for their relationship, as the star is consistently inspired by his spouse.

“We just motivated each other as friends,” Pharrell explained. “She pushes me. I push her.”

Pharrell first started his producing career in 1992, and has worked with the likes of Britney Spears and Kelis.

He also released music as part of band N.E.R.D, but the recent success of songs such as Happy and his guest appearance on Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines have made Pharrell a solo star in his own right.

The musician recently confessed he is shocked by all the fanfare he is now receiving.

"I never expected any of this. The only thing I expected to do was to continue being the guy who stood next to the guy... I was a producer you know," he told the BBC.
