Shakira honoured her “hero” Stevie Nicks on Tuesday night.
The pop star and her fellow The Voice US judge Adam Levine were among stars celebrating the legendary singer-songwriter at the 62nd annual BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles.
A spokesperson for Shakira logged onto Twitter early Wednesday sharing video of the star performing Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 hit song Landslide, revealing it was a huge moment for the Colombian singer.
“Here's a little video of Shak paying tribute to her hero Stevie Nicks at the #BMI awards a few hours ago,” the spokesperson wrote on her verified account.
Variety reports Adam later took the stage with Sheryl Crow for a performance of Leather and Lace.
“There’s not a woman that writes songs that doesn’t want to be you,” Sheryl said.
Lady Antebellum performed Rhiannon and Vanessa Carlton sang Dreams.
Stevie was honoured with the Icon Award during the ceremony.
Taking the stage, she spoke about how she got started in music, and the trials that followed.
“In the beginning, there was a song,” she said, adding that songwriting helped her through heartbreak.
“For the first time after all those years of singing other people’s beloved songs, I understood what love was and why people write these songs.”
The 65-year-old rock legend also opened up about the tough decision to pursue a solo career without leaving Fleetwood Mac behind.
“Being in a band with three writers means you only get three or four songs per album, and for somebody who writes as much as me that really just wasn’t enough,” Stevie explained.
She also had a few inspirational words for other songwriters.
“This is what you have to look forward to if you really want to do this forever. You can, you just have to – as my mom would say – put your nose to the grindstone and go for it and just be determined and don’t let anybody get in your way. I probably won’t be here in thirty years. But my spirit will be with you,” Stevie said.
