After months of whispers, rumour and speculation, the Glastonbury organisers have confirmed Metallica as the final headliner of this year's festival.

The metal band will take to the Pyramid stage on the Saturday night of the festival, joining Arcade Fire and Kasabian at the top of the 2014 bill.

Metallica's debut appearance at Worthy farm will be the first time a heavy metal band have headlined the event.

Tickets for this year sold out in just one hour and 27 minutes in October.

“They're one of the biggest bands in the world," said festival organiser Michael Eavis. "And on my travels people are always asking me, 'When are Metallica going to be playing Glastonbury?' I was so keen to book them. They'll be pleasing so many thousands of people."

Lars Ulrich said 'If anybody has anything to say, it’s a two-fingered salute and take that with ya'
