Sky Ferreira went through a “weird thing” in which she stopped speaking for years.
The 21-year-old singer released her debut studio album Night Time, My Time in 2013.
And Sky has revealed her new track from the LP, I Blame Myself, was inspired by a strange real-life experience.
"The second verse is based off of something that happened to me when I was like ten years old," she is quoted by MTV News as saying in a behind the scenes promo for the single’s music video.
"I went through some weird thing where I just stopped talking for two years. I was like, 'I have nothing to say anymore, so I'm not going to talk anymore.'"
Sky claims silence has been a pivotal part of her life for a while.
At times she feels like clamming up is the best solution when interpersonal relationships become difficult.
"Sometimes I feel the same way [as I did when I went mute at the age of ten]. It's like, 'I should just stop talking because no one's listening to me,'" Sky noted. "I've had a really big year and a lot of ups and downs and stuff and I think that sort of sums it all up in some way."
The songstress says most of her music is an unfiltered representation of all that she thinks and feels.
Sky wants fans to know her songs are authentic, as is her gangster-rap inspired music video for I Blame Myself.
"It's obviously based off of real events," she said of her single’s forthcoming promo.
"People always ask me questions about certain things, and it's kind of like my response. I think actions speak louder than words."
