Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin reportedly escaped to the Bahamas before announcing their split.

The former couple confirmed they were ending their marriage of over ten years via a statement on Gwyneth’s Goop website on Tuesday.

And apparently they were anticipating the unavoidable frenzy news of their breakup would cause, with sources telling Us Weekly they enjoyed a quiet getaway not long before announcing they had separated.

Chris and Gwyneth got married in December 2003 and have two children – son Moses, seven, and daughter Apple, nine.

There was intense speculation over the past year about the status of their relationship, with rumours circulating that the marriage was on the rocks.

Gwyneth never pretended to find marriage easy, and has previously explained the reason they are rarely seen together in public is out of respect for Chris’ career.

“He makes music for his fans, and he doesn’t want people to conjure a lame famous couple when they’re getting into his music. I get it,” she told the US edition of Elle magazine in 2011.

“Sometimes it's hard being with someone for a long time. We go through periods that aren’t all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Gwyneth and Chris have made it clear that despite the split they still love and respect each other, and will continue to take care of their children together.

This is a sentiment the actress has often spoken about in the past.

“If, God forbid, we were ever not to be together, I respect him so much as the father of my children. Like, I made such a good choice,” she said. “He’s such a good dad. You can never be relaxed or smug and think, I’ve got this thing. That’s also part of it - keeping yourself on your toes. I’m not going to take this for granted.”
