The Rolling Stones threw a curve-ball to fans in Tokyo on Tuesday night playing the Goats Head Soap classic ‘Silver Train’ live for the first time in 40 years.

‘Silver Train’ is a rare live song. It was only ever played by The Rolling Stones for one week over four shows in September, 1973.

The album Goats Head Soap was released on August 31, 1973. The Stones only performed the song on September 1, 1973 in Austria, September 3 and 4, 1973 in Germany and in England on September 7, 1973.

Mick Taylor, who played guitar on the original version, joined the Stones for the song and stayed on for ‘Midnight Rambler’. Taylor came back on stage for ‘Satisfaction’ in the encore.
