Louis Tomlinson seems excited to be taking part in a charity football match today.

The One Direction singer is playing the reserve squad for his hometown football team Doncaster Rovers tonight in a charity match against Rotherham United.

And the 22-year-old heartthrob couldn't wait to remind his Twitter followers that the big day had arrived.

'Ahhhhh today's the day!' he wrote on the social networking site, with what could be a mixture of nerves and excitement.

The match is in aid of Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, which offers care and support to youths with a short life expectancy in Louis' home county, Yorkshire.

Louis has always been a big football fan and before he found international success with One Direction, he had his own pub team called Three Horseshoes.

It was announced last year Louis had been offered a non-contract deal by Doncaster Rovers to be a development player and to participate in reserve games, working around his music commitments with the band.

Ahead of tonight's match, local BBC News are reporting that thousands of the band's fans are set to descend on the club's grounds to watch their hero play.

'We've sold more than 4,000 tickets,' Doncaster Rovers spokesman Steve Uttley told the BBC. "The usual turnout for a match like this would be about 100."

One Direction have been enjoying some well earned time off since Christmas ahead of their Where We Are Tour.

The break has meant Louis has been able to get some training in with the team ahead of the match.

"Louis has been training hard over the past month with Brian Flynn and the lads ahead of the game, including a long session today with the reserve players,' another club official told the media outlet on Tuesday, February 25.
