Katy Perry and John Mayer have apparently broken up.

The Roar singer has been in an on/off relationship with the musician since 2012.

Despite rumours they were engaged, E! News is now reporting that the 29-year-old has called time on their romance.

"A source close to the pair exclusively tells E! News that Perry broke up with Mayer within the last few days," the website writes.

There are currently no further details about the alleged split, but John tellingly didn't accompany the brunette when she visited London and Milan recently.

Katy sparked speculation that John had popped the question when she was spotted with a huge diamond on her ring finger on Valentine's Day.

However, insiders were quick to rubbish the rumours.

"It's not true. They are not engaged," a source told Us Weekly. Another added: "It was a romantic Valentine's Day dinner for the two of them in a private spot but there was no proposal… the dinner was sweet but low-key."

Contradictory reports claimed that the pair were looking to wed in June at San Ysidro Ranch in Katy's hometown of Santa Barbara.

Katy started dating John after her failed marriage to UK comedian Russell Brand.

She wed the Brit in October 2010, but he filed for divorce in December 2011.

John, 36, has never been married, but has enjoyed flings with stars including Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift.

He has recorded songs with both Katy and Taylor and the 24-year-old's hit Dear John is believed to be a song all about the pair's breakup.
