Mariah Carey refuses to rush her new album.

The pop superstar released her last record in 2010 and she’s bent on making sure her still-untitled offering is perfect despite the four-year wait.

She believes fans will appreciate her holding back when they hear her new songs, because they’re so personal.

"The album itself was always most important because I wanted to make sure that it was a journey that was representative of who I am and what I've been through over the past three years," she told MTV News.

"It was just something where I felt like, 'I'm not ready. I don't want to throw this [out there] because I have 14 or 15 songs or however many songs. I can say, 'Here's your album,' and there are very personal songs on there, but I wanted it to be a complete journey."

The album, formerly titled The Art of Letting Go, is currently scheduled for release May 6. Record executives have pushed back the release before, however.

Mariah has meanwhile had her hands full with two-and-a-half year old twins Moroccan and Monroe, her children with husband Nick Cannon, since releasing 2009’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and 2010’s Merry Christmas II You.

The singer insists that going through so many life changes has affected the way she approaches her music.

"I really need to sit here and think about the journey the album takes you through," she said. "Because it is truly a journey, and there's a lot of different emotions that are very, very real."
