Cher is urging fans to help save dogs from being euthanised in Sochi.
The pop star’s pal has set up a charity to help rescue stray animals in the coastal Russian city, where the 2014 Winter Olympics are taking place.
She shared a link to the Facebook page for PovoDOG, the first dog shelter in Sochi set up by the Volnoe Delo Oleg Deripaska Foundation, one of Russia’s largest private charity funds.
“MY AMAZINGLY COMPASSIONATE RUSSIAN FRIEND OLEG,IS SAVING DOGS IN SOCHI!HE’S STARTED CHARITY ON FB CALLED “PROVO DOG” PLEASE CHECK IT OUT,” she tweeted on Sunday (sic).
“THIS IS MY RUSSIAN FRIEND OLEG’S CHARITY IT WOULD MAKE ME SO HAPPY IF YOU’D JUST CHECK IT OUT.”
The shelter is reportedly financed by Russian billionaire Oleg V. Deripaska.
According to the shelter’s Facebook page, PovoDOG has spent $15, 000 to create the shelter.
“Annual operating costs are estimated at $56,000,” a spokesperson writes.
The New York Times wrote about the shelter last week.
The newspaper’s David M. Herszenhorn reports animal rights workers have been “racing to save the strays from exterminators" who have already killed hundreds of animals on the orders of government officials in Russia.
Last week, the shelter had rescued approximately 80 dogs.
Workers are reportedly hoping athletes and visitors will consider adoptions.
