Lorde is attracted to “cocky or grandiose” things.
The 17-year-old New Zealander received four Grammy nominations for music off her debut album Pure Heroine.
And the teenager reveals her innovative sounds are inspired by things and people who exhibit boldness.
"I've always been into the idea of confidence,” she told Rolling Stone magazine.
"Even my stage name is kind of cocky or grandiose."
After catapulting into stardom last year Lorde, real name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor, is appreciative of her really good friends.
She has struck up a strong relationship with Taylor Swift, 21, and she acknowledges the country songstress for being one of the few young musicians with “real teenage voices”.
"There are very few of us," Lorde explained.
"The other teenagers sing other people's songs, which is fine, but it's not an authentic teenage experience."
Lorde has captured headlines for speaking her mind so openly about fellow pop stars.
In a September 2013 interview with UK newspaper Metro, she said Taylor may be a bad influence on girls because her image is “so flawless and so unattainable”.
She also previously labelled Selena Gomez’s hit single Come & Get It as anti-feminist.
But apparently there are no feuds boiling between Lorde and any of her pop star peers.
She was amongst the attendees at Taylor’s 24th birthday last month in Australia and Selena is also disinterested in causing conflict.
"I'm going to support her whether she likes me or not because I think she's doing great things," Selena said of Lorde in the March issue of Seventeen magazine.
"Some day I will see her and we'll be cool."
