Katy Perry has advised those going through breakups to find "self-love".

The singer married UK comedian Russell Brand in 2010, but their union ended in divorce just 14 months later.

She's happily dating John Mayer now, but the 29-year-old can vividly remember what heartbreak felt like and urges others in a similar situation to spend time on themselves.

"You should always be true to yourself and know self-love before any other kind of love," she explained to the British edition of OK! magazine.

Katy has previously admitted she found her split from Russell very difficult and even contemplated suicide at one point.

She's now in a much better place and revealed what got her through the dark times.

"I did meditation, went on long hikes and started opening up to my friends," she revealed.

"I realised I had to stop blaming other people for my sadness and take responsibility for my own pain and then bring myself to a more positive place. It was hard."

Katy and John have been on and off since August 2012, but are currently going strong.

She's also focusing on her career and her latest album, Prism.

"I feel like I'm a work in progress," she admitted.

"I've had to experience some very depressing times, before being able to heal myself and get back my self-confidence - which had sunk very low."

The next 12 months look to be a positive time for Katy, with her Prismatic World Tour kicking off in Belfast on May 7.
