The Red Hot Chili Peppers will reportedly perform during the Super Bowl halftime show next month.

The Los Angeles rock band has apparently signed on to join headliner Bruno Mars during the February 2 performance at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

According to the L.A. Times, Bruno will make the announcement Saturday that he's invited the group to appear at the game.

The Chili Peppers, comprised of Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer, are currently on tour.

However, the rockers are scheduled to play in New York on February 1 for a pre-Super Bowl event.

Spokespersons for Bruno and the National Football League have yet to comment on the report.

Performing at the annual American football championship game is one of the most coveted gigs for music artists, with millions of TV viewers tuning in.

Last year, Beyoncé was the highlight of the event, belting out her track Crazy In Love before reuniting with her Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a medley of hits.

The previous year saw Madonna take the stage with LMFAO, Cirque du Soleil, Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green and M.I.A., who stirred controversy after putting up her middle finger during the show.

A civil suit is pending on the matter with the NFL seeking damages from the singer amid claims she breached her performance contract and disgraced the organisation's reputation with her antics.
