Lorde thinks girls are "particularly weird".
The 17-year-old singer soared to fame following the release of her debut single Royals last year.
The star - real name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor - struggles to feel comfortable in her surroundings now she is well-known and even finds school tough.
"I feel like I'm alone a lot. Partly because I'm in high school and there are people being quite cliquey. Girls are particularly weird," she explained to British magazine Look.
"I love to observe how they process the high school situation. Over the last couple of months I've just started to realise that, wow, people in the real world don't care if your legs aren't perfect."
The brunette musician's success has earned her almost 800,000 followers on social networking site Twitter.
While fellow singers such as Lady Gaga have a nickname for their loyal fans, with the quirky singer naming hers Little Monsters, Lorde insists she will never fall into that category.
"F**k no! That's the worst!" she cringed when asked if she has a name for her fanbase. "I find it grating to lump everyone into a really awkward, pun-centric name. People joke about it on Twitter: 'You should call us 'The Disciples'.' Never! I have discouraged it. I've tweeted multiple times: 'No fan names. I do not condone this.'"
With 2014 now underway Lorde has one particular mission for her music.
"Hopefully [people] can identify in some way with what I'm talking about [this year]," she added. "It's important that my peers kind of get it, and understand what I'm dealing with."
