Jason Derülo learnt to “trust his gut” this year.
The singer was forced to take time off work and cancel his Future History Tour in 2012 when he broke one of his vertebrae during rehearsal.
In 2013 he came back with a bang, introducing new album Tattoos of which song Talk Dirty hit number one in several countries.
“I learned throughout the year to trust my gut and what people around me say,” he reflected to British newspaper Daily Star.
“I had a feeling Talk Dirty was the record. As I played it to people, they went nuts for it. You don’t have to go into a lab and put this potion here and that potion there to find out what a good song is.
“Talk Dirty being my third number one in the UK was pretty special. Beforehand there was such a big argument on what the next single should be after The Other Side.”
The 24-year-old is dating fellow popstar Jordin Sparks and is looking forward to seeing in 2014 with loved ones.
However, it will be more about performing than partying for Jason.
“I’ll be celebrating the New Year tonight,” he smiled. “However I am working as it’s a big date performance wise.
“I’m doing Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest - they film part of it in New York and part in LA so I pre-taped it so I can do another performance.
“The New Year is such a big payday – you can literally go anywhere, bring your family and make a party out of it.
“That’s why you see so many performers at New Year.”
Luckily Jason made a full recovery after his accident in 2012 and hasn’t slowed down since.
He’s famed for his killer physique and didn’t let up his fitness regime over the holidays.
“I’ll be drinking vodka with water as my dancers and I have been doing a 30-day fitness challenge and tomorrow our choreographer is going to decide who has got the best body,” he explained.
“I couldn’t pig out over Christmas as I knew they weren’t going to do it. But you’ve got to have a little alcohol – it is the holidays after all!”
