Beyoncé Knowles recorded 80 tracks for her surprise album.

The superstar singer's self-titled fifth record came out earlier this month, with no fanfare or promotion. Even though it was a complete shock it still topped the charts and the star has posted a series of videos on YouTube in which she chats about the release.

In the latest, called Part 3 Run 'N Gun, Beyoncé opens up about individual tracks.

"When I started picking the songs that I gravitated towards, because I recorded about 80 songs, it was the songs that were more effortless to me that stuck around," she explained.

The songs were actually made around 12 months ago, before the star began her The Mrs Carter Show World Tour.

Among them is Drunk in Love, which features the star's husband Jay-Z.

"I kind of free styled the verse, and Jay went in and he started flowing out his verse.we just kinda had a party," she recalled. "It was so great, because it wasn't about any ego, we weren't trying to make a hit record. we were just having fun. and I think you can hear that in the record."

As well as the 14 songs on the record there are also 17 videos, one for each track and three additional ones. Beyoncé had a blast shooting the promos as she did something she never has before - didn't obsess about the planning.

"[Drunk in Love was the] most organic shoot I've ever done. I wanted to carry this idea of being in the moment and embracing mistakes and effortlessness into the videos. I wish every video was like Drunk," she said.

"We've been deciding what we're going to do as we're there, and it's something about that freedom that's different for me, because I usually plan things.

"If it was my choice, I would never have a permit. I would just get in the car, get a camera, and we'd just shoot, and trust me, we tried. I'm trying to rebel against perfection. It's fun because you never know what's going to happen."
