Katy Perry and John Mayer “share music as a love together”.

The musicians started dating in the summer of 2012 after Katy was granted a divorce from comedian Russell Brand.

Although both singers are huge stars, Katy reveals their first date was as typical as they come.

“We just went to dinner, like a regular couple," she said during an appearance on Good Morning America with John. “We share music as a love together. That's like a common interest.”

The couple were on the show for their first ever joint TV interview to promote their new duet Who You Love.

And the couple were obviously a little nervous on how to behave in front of the cameras.

“We don't quite know what kind of body language we should be exhibiting at the moment," John teased with Katy by his side.

“You get too close, it's too touchy feely. And then you get too far, it's 'I don't see chemistry.'”

John took the lead in explaining how the duet came about.

He was the first to admit that he was unsure about doing it when his manager Don first suggested Katy feature on the track.

“My very first thought was 'You can't do that.' The more I thought about it, it made sense. Even if I didn't know Katy, it would have made perfect sense,” he recalled.

The couple are overjoyed with the resulting song.

They are also willing to take the risks that come with releasing the record as a couple.

“If the song is great, you're sort of in a bubble of authenticity,” John said. “It's a pretty big moving target to be a couple and have a song, but I think there's an authenticity to it.”

Katy added, “It transcends us. It's more about the message of the song.”
