Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has been named the nation's favourite Christmas song - a new poll has found.

The survey by money saving site, PromotionalCodes.org.uk asked 600 online shoppers to name their top festive tune from a list of ten provided.

More than a quarter of voters, 26%, said that Carey's hit Christmas song was their number one choice.

This was closely followed by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's 'Fairytale of New York', which scored almost a fifth, 19%, of the vote.

'Merry Xmas Everybody' by glam rock band Slade made the third spot receiving support from 16% of voters.

In fourth place came Wizard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' with more than one in ten voters, 11% naming it as their favourite.

Just scraping into the top five was 'Last Christmas' by Wham scoring nine per cent of the vote.

In sixth place with seven per cent was veteran crooner and national treasure, Sir Cliff Richard with his hit 'Mistletoe and Wine'.

In the number seven spot came Band Aid's charity hit 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' which was favoured by five per cent of voters.

In eighth and ninth place came one hit wonder, Jona Lewie's 'Stop The Cavalry', and Sir Paul McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime', scoring four and two per cent respectively.

Rounding off the list in tenth place was 90's classic 'Stay Another Day' by East 17, scoring just one per cent.

One woman who took part in the poll said: 'As soon as I hear these songs on the radio, I know that Christmas is just around the corner.

'Although after about the fifth or sixth time of hearing Noddy Holder shouting 'It's Christmas!' they begin to grate a little.

'For that reason, Mariah would have to be my number one choice, as it's the only Christmas song I can listen to over and over again without getting sick of it.'

A male respondent added: 'It has to be the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl every time for me. It's such a great tune I never get tired of hearing it.
'To be honest I like all Christmas music, I even enjoy Sir Cilff's festive tunes ' in moderation though.'

A spokesperson from PromotionalCodes.org.uk commented: 'Each of us have the Christmas songs we love or just love to hate. In fact it is the only time of year we can let our musical guard down without fear of ridicule.

'My favourite has to be Wham's 'Last Christmas' ' it's a pity that song never made it to number one in the charts.

'It's a real shame that we don't get any seasonal songs in the charts anymore ' I think it is time we reject the standard X Factor Christmas No.1 and return to the good old days of festive pop.'
