Katy Perry was welcomed into the UNICEF family Tuesday night.

The 29-year-old pop star was appointed the philanthropic organisation's newest Goodwill Ambassador earlier in the day.

Katy was later joined by employees of the United Nations programme to commemorate the honour at the star-studded 2013 UNICEF Snowflake Ball in New York City.

She took the stage to perform her new hit, Unconditionally, at the affair at Cipriani Wall Street.

Christina Ricci and Danny Glover, who was honoured with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award, were also in attendance.

UNICEF is a United Nations programme based in New York that offers assistance to mothers and children in developing countries.

Katy will work specifically with children affected by abuse, neglect, poverty, and violence, and youth who are adversely impacted by conflict. She was praised in the announcement of her post Tuesday by UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake, who called her a "champion for children".

Katy earlier in the day took to Twitter to share her excitement.

"Guys! I am SO honored to become a @UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador today! I am #unconditionallyUNICEF. @voicesofyouth," she tweeted.

The star also included a link to a video "showing her at work - and at play - with children around the world, featuring her song Unconditionally", a spokesperson wrote, adding: "Welcome Katy Perry to the UNICEF Family."
