The Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis, which was inspired by the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk, has taken home the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Grand Prix is considered the second highest award at the festival, after the Palme d'Or which went to the lesbian love story Blue is the Warmest Colour.

The Coen Brothers have a long history of wins at Cannes for films such as Barton Fink (1991) which won the Palme d'Or along with Best Actor (John Turturro) and Best Director (Joel Coen), Fargo (1996, Best Director), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001, Best Director) and The Lady Killers (2004).

Inside Llewyn Davis is loosely based on Dave Van Ronk's posthoumusly published memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street and stars Oscar Isaac as the title character, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Justin Timberlake. Included are performances of old folk songs, a staple of the Greenwich Village scene in the early 60's, by Isaac, Mulligan, Timberlake, Stark Sands and Adam Driver with T Bone Burnett producing with help from Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons.

The film will go into limited release in the U.S. on December 6 with a wide opening on December 20.
