Absolute Radio has developed a documentary series with the V&A Museum in London to produce ‘David Bowie Is’– the definitive Bowie story with the V&A exhibition at its heart.
The three-part documentary will be presented by award-winning comedian, composer and Bowie-devotee Tim Minchin; it charts Bowie’s career from his early life in post-war Brixton right through to his new album ‘The Next Day’.
Tim Minchin said “David Bowie is a master of re-invention, one of the most iconic musicians of all time and a hero of mine. His story has been told before, but never like this.”
The story is told by those who know David best, the friends and musicians who have been part of Bowie's life over six decades. Contributors including childhood friend and artist George Underwood, touring guitarist John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson, Suzi Ronson, wife of the late, great Mick Ronson among others, will draw memories and elaborate on the memorabilia, lyrics, photos and clothes which are on display at the ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition at the V&A.
As well as looking at Bowie's music the programmes will also explore David's acting career, his underrated role as a producer and writer for the likes of Iggy Pop and Ian Hunter, plus listeners will gain an insight into his fascination with technology and the internet. Part 1 will focus on Brixton to Ziggy (1947-1973), Part 2 will cover Thin White Duke to Scary Monsters (1973-1980) and Part 3 will deal with Let's Dance to The Next day (1980-2013).
The three hour-long programmes will be broadcast on Absolute Radio on Sunday 7th, 14th and 21st at 7pm and will be accompanied by a series of short online films featuring additional material and interviews.
