Nicki Minaj thinks she is “required to hurt people’s feelings” on American Idol.

The star was speaking following the first ever sudden death round which sees five out of ten wannabes eliminated on each show for two weeks.

The rounds are taking place at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

"I don't want to hurt people's feelings," Nicki admitted to People. "But I guess that's what we're required to do."

Her fellow judges Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson have also been finding the cut throat process difficult.

Mariah confessed she “hated” the eliminations on Wednesday night’s show, which saw five out of ten female contestants cut from the contest.

"Everybody was talented and different,” she recalled. “There were some special people we had to get rid of."

The sudden death round sees the judges make the decision behind closed doors over who to eliminate.

And according to Keith, the discussions get “impassioned” when it comes to selecting which contestants to keep on the hit show.

"You have need re-discuss and re-discuss what is it we're really looking for and what are we basing this decision on,” he explained. “Even that is never easy. There is no clear cut decision on that."
