Mindy McCready's ex-fiancé claims "red flags were everywhere" during their relationship.
The country singer was engaged to Superman star Dean Cain for a year from 1997.
Mindy was found dead at her Arkansas home on Sunday, after apparently shooting herself.
She found a battle with addiction during her life and Dean has admitted their romance wasn't always a happy one.
"She was never abusive or addictive with me, but red flags were everywhere," he told People magazine. "I saw all the bad signs and told her to get out."
Dean insists Mindy's addictions weren't apparent when they were together. Rather, it was the arguments they were often involved in which caused their relationship to implode.
"I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but I'm not surprised," Dean added.
Mindy's death came a month after her partner David Wilson died of an apparent suicide at the same house. Following his passing Mindy's sons Zander, six, and ten-month-old Zayne were put into foster care and she was ordered to a rehabilitation facility.
She was reportedly terrified they were going to be ordered to live with her estranged mother in the days leading up to her death.
"My first thought was of the poor kids. To think about the legacy those boys have been left, it's just tragic," Dean said "She had everything. She was a tremendous talent but everything about it was a waste."
Mindy was in touch with her friend Danno Hanks not long before she died. She spoke to him about how difficult she was finding life without David by her side.
RadarOnline reports the country star and Danno spoke over the phone, with the website obtaining a recording of the call.
"[The] point of me living is waiting to die so I can be with him,' Mindy apparently said.
'Danno, this is a real love story. It is. I have been with people before. I have loved. I have done all kinds of things where I could say that I was in 'something' with that person. But David was my soul mate. He was.
"If I had been just a little bit stronger I could have saved him. But I wasn't. I wasn't adequate enough."
