The Australian Communications and Media Authority will investigate the prank call by two 2DAY FM jocks that lead to the death of a London nurse.
Nurse Jacintha Saldanha took her life after falling victim to the prank call from Mel Greig and Michael Christian claiming to be The Queen and Prince Charles enquiring about the condition of the Duchess of Cambridge.
The 46-year old wife and mother-of-two was found dead earlier today after being publically humiliated on Australian radio and their globally via the Internet.
In a statement, Chris Chapman, Chairman of the Australian Communications and Media Authority said:
'These events are a tragedy for all involved and I pass on my heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased nurse in London.
'The ACMA does not propose to make any comments at this stage, but will be engaging with the licensee, Today FM Sydney, around the facts and issues surrounding the prank call'.
Under clause 6.1 of the commercial radio code:
'A licensee must not broadcast the words of an identifiable person unless:
(a) that person has been informed in advance or a reasonable person would be aware that the words may be broadcast; or
(b) in the case of words which have been recorded without the knowledge of the person, that person has subsequently, but prior to the broadcast, expressed consent to the broadcast of the words.'
Greig and Christian have been removed from the airwaves until further notice.
