One of the most coveted titles a band or musician could win was handed to Alt-J at the 2012 Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize in North London last night.

The four-piece folk electronica band beat Plan B, Jessie Ware and Richard Hawley at Camden's Roundhouse.

All 12 nominated artists played one track live showcasing what should be seen as the most impressive and influencial albums of the year.

Last year PJ Harvey picked up the award to make her the first and only second time winner.
