Taylor Swift imagines her songs coming together like pieces of a puzzle.

The country music darling started writing lyrics when she was 12.

And now the Grammy-winner has let fans in on how she composes her chart-topping hits.

”It’s always different,” Taylor told US breakfast programme Good Morning America. “Sometimes it’s a fragment of lyric and melody. Sometimes it’s like a background vocal or a post-hook or something like that.”

The 22-year-old star is famous for writing about her failed relationships.

But she admits it’s not always easy ciphering through her complex emotions and putting pen to paper.

“It’s like getting the first puzzle piece,” she added, explaining, “And you have to, at that point, figure out where it fits in the grand scheme of things and fill in the rest of the song.”

Taylor released her fourth studio album, Red, this month.

The first four promotional singles debuted in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.
