It was a BRIT Awards that was more about the performances than the engraved shiny statuettes.

And if Bono kicking starting proceedings at London's Earl's Court was going to be the benchmark for a night of great live music, then Music News was lucky enough to be there to witness British music at its best.

The U2 frontman leapt on stage in front of a giant video wall as the band launched into their storming new song Get Into Your Boots.

The mood then turned bright, shiny and Vegas-glam and the crowd lit up as Girls Aloud strutted their stuff behind large pink feathers to their smash hit Promise, which won Best Single.

Once some awards had been dished out, host James Corden then urged the crowd to "scream until your nipples ache", as Coldplay, dressed in colourful military jackets, treated the crowd to what did what they did best.

Complete with red paper glittering down on the arena, the four-piece gave a flawless performance of Viva La Vida.

Duffy, a triple-winner on the night, then gave a soulful rendition of her hit single Baby You Hurt Me, backed by a 25-piece band.

But it was Take That who gave the best performance of the night, the audience going wild in awe, as the much-loved four-piece descended from the ceiling in a space ship singing a perfectly harmonic Greatest Day.

Kings of Leon, this summer's hottest festival act, and who won Best International Album and Best International Group, got the crowd going crazy with "Use Somebody", and stirring up the best atmosphere of the evening.

The Ting Tings then teamed up with Estelle for mash up mix of their big hits, That's Not My Name and American Boy.

And after a few more gongs were handed out, the accolade of the night, presented by the Killers' Brandon Flowers, went to the Pet Shop Boys for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

They wrapped up the night with a medley of some of their greatest hits; Surburbia, Always On My Mind, Go West, What Have I Done To Deserve This, with Lady GaGa, It's A Sin, with Brandon Flowers, and their classic West End Girls, leaving us all on a very satisfied music high and happy to have witnessed one of the best ever Brits.
