After a searing performance at Levi's/Fader Fort during SXSW, Nas & Damian 'Jr.Gong' Marley have set music tongues wagging in anticipation for their forthcoming album release 'Distant Relatives'. The pair have just been confirmed to perform on the World Stage at this year's Heineken Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland. Having recently been crowned the 'Best Major Festival' at the inaugural European Festival Awards, Heineken Open'erFestival takes place from 1st ' 4th July 2010.
The youngest son of the legendary Bob Marley, Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley garnered his own place in music history when he became the first ever reggae artist to win a Grammy Award outside of the Reggae category, taking home an award for Best Urban / Alternative performance for his smash 2005 single 'Welcome To Jamrock'. The acclaimed breakthrough album of the same name also won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Nasty Nasir Jones has sold over 20 million albums worldwide over the span of his legendary career, and has acted as an ambassador for hip-hop culture throughout the globe. Also performing on the World Stage this year are Matisyahu, the brilliant Jewish reggae star and Tinariwen, the Malian band whose back story is as compelling as their music.
Tricky, the ex-Massive Attack member, will be reunited with his former band mates as he is added to the same bill in Poland. A musician who has truly been part of nearly all genres of music has managed to fuse hip-hop, soul, reggae and rock. Nowhere was this more evident than in his debut album 'Maxinquaye', which was voted Album of the Year
by NME Magazine.
Added to the Main Stage is the recently reformed Skunk Anansie, one of the most successful British bands of the late 90's. Their sound was uniquely definable, as well as the fashion icon and lead singer Skin, who made the transition form house music DJ to international rock star.
Some of the acts previously confirmed to play at Heineken Open'er Festival 2010 include; Pearl Jam, Kasabian, Massive Attack, Hot Chip, Gorillaz Sound System, Pavement, Empire of the Sun, Klaxons, Ben Harper and Relentless7, Mando Diao, The Hives, Matisyahu and Tinariwen.
