Andy Serkis plays Ian Dury in the biopic `Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll` to be released this week in the UK.

Serkis is the New Zealand actor who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies.

'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll`, directed by Mat Whitecross, tells the story of Dury who was stricken with polio as a boy from age 7 but grew up to become one of the pioneers of the UK new wave music scene in the 70s.

Ian Robins Dury was born in 1942 and died on 2000 at the age of 57.

In 1979, as Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Dury had his first number one hit worldwide with 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'. It sold one million copies in the UK. Then came 'Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3', a number 3 hit for the Blockheads.

The movie takes its name from Dury's signature song 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll'.

Dury became one of the stars of the Stiff Label. The innovative new wave label was also the original home of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Wreckless Eric.

Ian Dury died of liver cancer on March 27, 2000.
