BOB DYLAN was reportedly asked for ID by a young policewoman who didn't recognise him.

The legendary singer was stopped by the female officer in New Jersey after he was allegedly seen "acting suspiciously" while taking an afternoon walk.

Dylan was on tour with country star Willie Nelson last month when the incident happened.

They were both about to perform a gig at a local baseball stadium alongside fellow singer John Mellencamp, when Dylan decided to go for a walk.

But a local resident called police when they spotted him walking around a housing estate.

The female officer asked his name but didn't recognise him and when he was unable to prove who he was, she drove him to his hotel to get staff to vouch for him.

Long Branch resident, business administrator Howard Woolley, said: "I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work."

A spokesman for Dylan was not immediately available for comment.
